Choosing the Right Diagnostic Test
Selecting a diagnostic test is about more than simply finding the name of a pathogen or biomarker. When choosing an assay, consider:
What are you trying to detect?
Is the target an antibody, antigen, hormone, protein, nucleic acid or other biomarker?
What sample are you testing?
Different assays may be validated for serum, plasma, urine, saliva, stool, swabs or other sample types.
What methodology is required?
Depending on the application, an ELISA, PCR/qPCR, lateral flow rapid test or LineBlot may be appropriate.
What species is being tested?
Species compatibility is particularly important for veterinary and equine diagnostic testing.
Is the test for diagnostic or research use?
Always check the individual product documentation, intended use and regulatory status.
How many samples need to be tested?
Pack size and plate configuration can be important considerations for laboratories processing different sample volumes.
Our product catalogue provides these details at individual product level to help laboratories identify the most suitable testing solution.
Types of ELISA
Different ELISA formats are designed to answer different testing requirements.
Indirect ELISA
Indirect ELISA is commonly used for detecting antibodies in a sample. An antigen is immobilised on a solid surface and antibodies within the sample bind to it. A labelled secondary antibody is then used to generate a measurable signal.
Indirect ELISA is particularly useful for serological testing and antibody detection.
Our portfolio includes numerous indirect assays for infectious disease antibodies, autoimmune antibodies and other immunological targets.
Competitive ELISA
Competitive ELISA uses competition between sample and labelled or reference material for binding sites. The resulting signal is related to the amount of target present.
Competitive ELISA can be particularly useful for smaller molecules and analytes where a conventional sandwich assay is not practical.
Our portfolio includes competitive ELISA assays for targets including Brucella, influenza and West Nile virus, amongst others.
Sandwich ELISA
Sandwich ELISA uses two antibodies to capture and detect a target antigen or protein. The target is effectively “sandwiched” between the capture and detection antibodies.
This format is commonly used for measuring proteins, cytokines, biomarkers and other larger analytes.
Our range includes sandwich assays such as Rotavirus DAS ELISA alongside numerous specialist research assays.
Frequently Asked Questions About ELISA Testing
What does ELISA stand for?
ELISA stands for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. It is an immunoassay technique that uses specific antigen-antibody interactions and an enzyme-based detection system to identify or measure a target.
What is an ELISA kit used for?
ELISA kits can be used to detect or quantify a wide variety of biological targets, including antibodies, antigens, hormones, proteins, cytokines and other biomarkers.
What is the difference between ELISA and PCR?
ELISA is an immunoassay and generally detects an antigen, antibody or other target through antigen-antibody interactions. PCR is a molecular technique that amplifies and detects specific nucleic acid sequences. They therefore measure different biological targets and can serve different diagnostic purposes.
What is a sandwich ELISA?
A sandwich ELISA uses a capture antibody and a detection antibody to bind a target antigen or protein. The target is effectively captured between two immunological reagents.
What is an indirect ELISA?
Indirect ELISA is commonly used to detect antibodies in a sample. A target antigen is immobilised and antibodies in the sample bind to it before a labelled secondary antibody is used for detection.
Are ELISA tests quantitative?
Some ELISA assays are designed for quantitative measurement, while others are intended for qualitative or semi-quantitative analysis. Always check the individual assay documentation.
What samples can be used for ELISA testing?
The appropriate sample type depends on the individual assay. Depending on the product, this may include serum, plasma, urine, saliva, stool or other specimen types. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product.
Are ELISA tests suitable for veterinary diagnostics?
Yes. ELISA technology is widely used in veterinary diagnostics and our portfolio includes numerous veterinary and equine ELISA tests covering infectious diseases, antibodies, antigens and other biomarkers.
Do you supply PCR test kits?
Yes. Our portfolio includes PCR and qPCR kits, including molecular assays for several equine pathogens.
Do you supply rapid diagnostic tests?
Yes. Our catalogue includes lateral flow rapid tests for a selection of infectious disease and veterinary applications.
Do you supply autoimmune ELISA kits?
Yes. The portfolio includes a substantial range of autoimmune and autoantibody ELISA assays, including ANA, ENA, dsDNA, ANCA, anti-CCP, anti-cardiolipin, anti-tissue transglutaminase and numerous other targets.
Do you supply hormone ELISA kits?
Yes. The endocrinology portfolio includes assays for hormones including testosterone, progesterone, oestradiol, cortisol, TSH, T3, T4, FSH, LH, prolactin, insulin, PTH, ACTH, DHEA and many others.
Important Product Information
Product specifications, intended use, sample requirements, regulatory status, performance characteristics and availability can vary between individual products.
